Enhancing scattering in optical fibers by random periods can lead to broadband grating. They can be used as feedback in random fiber lasers to manipulate laser coherence and modes to create narrow linewidth laser with low phase and frequency jitter.
The grating itself can be used as multi-parameter sensing and sensing element in distributed sensors with temperature resolution of 0.001 °C, as a random laser feedback, they can give broadband ultrasound laser sensor.
